History
In August 2016, the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), alongside faith leaders representing organizations and institutions from around the country, joined together to share El Camino del lnmigrante, a 150-mile walking solidarity pilgrimage from the Tijuana/San Diego border to downtown Los Angeles, highlighting the need to address our broken immigration system.
Why El Camino?
Noel Castellanos, President of Christian Community Development Association
“Throughout history we have seen the power of pilgrimage to provoke justice, not by taking up arms, but by letting our feet do the talking. The walk from Selma to Montgomery; the walk from Delano to Sacramento & today, El Camino Del Inmigrante; a 150 mile walk in solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters, is unleashing the power of pilgrimage once more. While our journey has come to an end today, we continue to walk on the Kingdom Camino until every path has been made straight and leads to justice for all vulnerable peoples in our nation and world. We will not be sidetracked from this narrow path, and we will wait no more to declare that we serve the God of justice and love.”
Michelle Warren, Advocacy & Policy Engagement Director, CCDA
“As Christians, we are a people of shared hope, not in what we see but in what we believe can and should be. The current immigration and criminal justice system has left us in a place of stagnation and brokenness, crippling our communities. While we have traveled the 150 miles from the border into our national conference site in downtown Los Angeles, we have grown stronger in our convictions that the status quo cannot remain. We must push out the darkness of hate, bigotry and systems that have grown up from those places with the light of Christ and those who are a part of His kingdom. We will wait no more.”
Alexia Salvatierra, Camino walker, Lutheran Pastor, Los Angeles
“We serve the God of the Exodus, who calls us to participate in bringing the people to a place where they are free from the suffering caused by unjust laws and practices. In the Camino, we have seen so many people who are being moved by the Spirit to join the cause of justice; I believe it is God’s moment for change to occur. Wait No More!”
